A controversial but compelling debate…

Newsbeat have reported a story about a business supposedly offering free spray tans to unemployed youngsters as part of a ‘one stop shop’ to help them get into employment. Other parts of the service are dietary and fitness advice, confidence training and appearance advice. They argued that if someone feels and looks better they will have more of a chance at getting a new job.

Have a read for yourselves: http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/20321731

This got us discussing the story in the office and whether we agree that appearance ‘does’ matter and whether if ‘should’ matter. So here’s the controversial bit, we agreed that yes humans are predisposed to judge others based on a superficial idea of what someone should look like. In its most basic form we would expect candidates to be clean, tidy and well presented, but does it go beyond that in terms of appearance and how honest are employers prepared to be about if they recruit purely on skills and experience alone…

What are your thoughts and/or experiences with this? Do you feel you have been discriminated against based on appearance or are you guilty of judging a book by its cover??
